12.10.2007

EuroMeetings Press Release: MALTA, Oct 11 – Euromeetings are continuing in tough anti-doping measures and urged the member meetings not to invite athletes who could harm the events with their doping offences from the past. As already said in March at Spring Meeting in Birmingham also now at the General Assembly during European Calendar Conference in Malta athletes who could cause negative publicity should not be invited to take part.

After receiving information from IOC, IAAF and USADA the European meetings will closely follow the case of Marion Jones which has made the headlines in recent days. “We will wait on the outcome of the investigation of the respective bodies and then we will consider any action,” said Euromeetings president Rajne Soderberg in connection to possible demand to get back from Jones monies paid to her by the meetings in the past.

Euromeetings discussed calendars for 2008 and 2009 with next year being a tough one for the meetings with UEFA European Championships in football and Olympic Games in Beijing. European Athletics president Hansjorg Wirz presented views into the future of competition structure with possibilities to restructure the categorizations and levels of one day meetings.

New member elected was the meeting of Bydgoszcz, Poland as a first ever member from this country in the history of the organization.

Euromeetings is the group of organizers of European athletics meetings. Currently there are 40 members with 51 meetings. All IAAF Golden League and Grand Prix Meetings are the members; most of the European Athletics Permit Meetings are also members.
